May Volunteer Of The Month: Heather Janssen

May volunteer of the month

When did you start volunteering at PAWS?

I started at the end of June 2015.

What jobs/roles have you performed at PAWS?

I started as a dog side volunteer and then became one of the Shift Leaders on Wednesday evenings. I also help mentor new dog side volunteers at PAWS.

What do you currently do as a volunteer?

I am currently a dog care volunteer, Shift Leader and a new volunteer mentor.

Why do you volunteer at PAWS?

I started volunteering at PAWS because I was new to the area and was looking for something to do with my extra time. I love coming every week to spend time with the dogs as well as the many wonderful people I have met from PAWS.

When you're not at PAWS, what do you like to do with your time?

I enjoy spending time playing board games, watching Netflix, playing with my dog, Ford (PAWS alum). Recently, most of my free time has been spent wedding planning as I am getting married this September.

What do you like best about being a PAWS volunteer? What do you find to be the most rewarding?

The best thing about being a PAWS volunteer is that you get to help and see so many animals get wonderful, loving homes. The most rewarding thing is seeing dogs improve and grow while they are there.

If someone asked you why they should volunteer at PAWS, what answer would you give?

PAWS is not only a place where you get to meet and help great animals, but people as well. PAWS is one of my favorite things about living in State College and look forward to volunteer every week.
