Volunteer Pre-Veterinary Internship

Centre County PAWS is offering the opportunity for a limited number of Penn State undergraduate students to obtain hands-on shelter medicine experience. Students will work with PAWS’ on-site veterinarian assisting with and observing health care for a variety of feline and canine conditions. 

Participants can expect the following:

  • Assist with a wide range of extensive surgical procedures 
  • Help with pre/post op animal care
  • Assist with dental procedures
  • Learn Fear-Free handling techniques
  • Understand herd health management 
  • Learn proper disinfection protocol in a veterinary & animal shelter setting
  • Possibly obtain a Veterinarian letter of recommendation dependent upon performance

Candidates for this position should meet the following qualifications:

  • Enrolled full time at Penn State in a major that prepares them for admission to veterinary school and is currently at a junior or senior level of study.
  • Can commit to attend at least two weekday mornings per week at PAWS from approximately 9AM-12PM for a full semester 
  • Has transportation to/from our facility. 
  • Intends to pursue a career in veterinary science.


This is a volunteer position designed to give exposure and experience to individuals intending to pursue a career in veterinary medicine. Applications for the Fall 2025 semester are accepted through July 15, 2025.
