July 17, 2016

Starting this month, PAWS will featuring a new blog series called Volunteer of the Month to celebrate the hard work and dedication of our outstanding volunteers. The July 2016 Volunteer of the Month is Ellen Hermann. Here, Ellen tells us about her experiences as a PAWS volunteer:

When did you start volunteering at PAWS?

9-10 years ago when I attended the first open house of the current (new) building; I was so impressed I signed up that day.

What jobs/roles have you performed at PAWS?

Before we had hired helpers, I was part of a team that kept the kennels and rooms clean, walked dogs, medicated them along with doing laundry on Monday/Wednesday mornings.

What do you currently do as a volunteer?

I am a dog adoption counselor and my husband Jim and I foster dogs for PAWS.

Why do you volunteer at PAWS?

I've made good friends there and I'm very proud of the rescue work PAWS does.

What has made you continue volunteering for so long?

As each dog is placed in a good home, we meet new dogs that need help. The job always changes and I learn new things about dog issues every day.

When you're not at PAWS, what do you like to do with your time?

I have a stained glass studio; although I am retired now I still enjoy creating one-of-a kind designs for family and friends. We have a large yard and I enjoy gardening and landscaping work.

What do you like best about being a PAWS volunteer?

It's heartwarming when I can help a dog in need find the perfect home.

What do you find to be the most rewarding?

Working with adopters to find the perfect match for them and their home environment.

If someone asked you why they should volunteer at PAWS, what answer would you give?

Not only would you be helping all types of dogs and cats, you will meet many wonderful people in our community.
