December Volunteer of the Month: Judy Rayback

Cat volunteer
December 20, 2017

Meet Judy Rayback, our PAWS December Volunteer of the Month! Judy recently logged 1,500 hours to earn a feature on our blog and in our volunteer newsletter. We asked Judy to share a little about herself, and here's what she said:

How long have you been at PAWS?

I began at Paws shortly after I retired from the University in 2004. My first and best mentor was Jackie Wolfe.

What's your favorite thing about PAWS?

My favorite thing about Paws is that we are saving and helping hundreds of cats and dogs every year.  Each one is precious and has feelings, no matter what shape they're in.

What's your favorite thing to do at PAWS?

My favorite thing to do is work at socializing the cats.  Those that look mean or aggressive are often just scared, and if you approach them slowly and quietly, and sometimes with treats, they eventually will see you as a friend. Fostering is sometimes challenging in that way.  It's wonderful when a kitten finally jumps in your lap.

What are your favorite non-PAWS hobbies?

Hobbies include reading and attending OLLI classes.  We used to sail, but now anticipate doing something more serene--canoeing.

How long have you lived in Centre County?

I've lived in State College since I was 4 years old.  My father worked at the Ordinance Research Lab and taught at the University. My husband Mac and I left for a few years when he was in law school and in the Army.  I returned for the year he spent in Vietnam.  We started our family--Shelly, who is now an assistant professor of geography at the University of Vermont, and Brian, who is a lawyer in Portland, Maine.

What's your favorite book or movie?

My favorite books are by the late Pat Conroy and my current favorite movie is "Gifted" with Chris Evans.

Where's your favorite place to vacation?

Mac and I have taken several cruises, but our favorite vacation spot is the beach at Avalon, NJ, with our whole family.

What do you like to do in Centre County?

Our favorite thing to do in Centre County is just living in one of the most beautiful places on earth.

Thank you Judy for everything you do for PAWS!
