Meet Shelby, our March Volunteer of the Month!

When did you start volunteering at PAWS?

I started to volunteer at PAWS in 2013.

What jobs/roles have you performed at PAWS and what do you currently do as a volunteer?

I started off volunteering as a dog walker, moved on to floor volunteer on the dog side and also dog showing on Sundays. I started to foster dogs which is what I mainly do now. I also write Thank You cards for individuals who are kind enough to become Guardian Angels for our dogs and cats.

Why do you volunteer at PAWS?

I volunteer at PAWS because I have always been around animals and I like being able to help the animals that have been abused or have become homeless.

When you're not at PAWS, what do you like to do with your time?

When I am not physically at PAWS I usually have a foster, so not a lot of down time; however when I am without a foster I like to hang with my 5 dogs (4 of which are PAWS dogs). I also like to be outside gardening and going to flea markets.

What do you like best about being a PAWS volunteer? What do you find to be the most rewarding?

I am glad that I am at a period in my life where I am able to open my house to provide care and love to some of the animals that end up at our facility. The most rewarding and the most heartbreaking time is when my fosters go to their new forever homes.

If someone asked you why they should volunteer at PAWS, what answer would you give?

I would tell people who are considering volunteering that once you look into the eyes of some of these dogs, you know why you volunteer. To watch them soak up love that they never had is very heartwarming.
