Centre County PAWS is pleased to introduce you to Dave Abler, another longtime volunteer who has recently surpassed 3,000 hours of volunteer service to the PAWS Adoption Center. Volunteers like Dave are the heart and soul of our organization who make it possible for us to care for and find homes for hundreds of cats and dogs every year. Here, Dave tells us about his experiences as a PAWS volunteer:
When did you start volunteering at PAWS?
In 2001.
What jobs/roles have you performed at PAWS?
I began as a dog-side volunteer helping with the Sunday dog showings. I joined the Board of Directors in 2004 and became Vice President in 2005. I became President in 2008, and was President during 2008-2010 and since 2012.
What do you currently do as a volunteer?
I'm the President of PAWS, and as President I'm responsible for the overall leadership of PAWS. I work with our Board of Directors and our staff and volunteers to develop, communicate and implement our goals and direction in order to achieve our mission. I'm also a member of the IT Committee.
Why do you volunteer at PAWS?
I love everything about PAWS - our mission, the great work that we do, and the wonderful volunteers, staff and supporters of PAWS. Being President gives me the opportunity to tell and hear many stories about all the great things we do in the community.
What has made you continue volunteering for so long?
It's been very rewarding to be part of the growth of PAWS. When I started volunteering in 2001, PAWS was a small fraction of its size today in terms of adoptions, spay-neuter assistance and number of volunteers, and at that time we didn't have our current facility or any paid staff. It feels great to have contributed to the growth we've enjoyed since then.
When you're not at PAWS, what do you like to do with your time?
When I'm not at PAWS, I like to spend time on my farm. We have egg-laying chickens, ducks, geese, and guineas. I also enjoy traveling to any beach, and my business trips to China and Europe.
What do you like best about being a PAWS volunteer? What do you find to be the most rewarding?
I enjoy talking with the volunteers and staff about what they're doing at PAWS. I also enjoy all of our events and the opportunity to meet new supporters of PAWS.
If someone asked you why they should volunteer at PAWS, what answer would you give?
Volunteering at PAWS is heartwarming and you'll have a lot of fun! There are lots of volunteer opportunities to suit everyone's interests. You'll meet new people, make new friends, and feel great knowing that you're making a difference in the lives of homeless cats and dogs.
